Understand Vehicle Safety Ratings

We want to help educate you about all aspects of modern driving. Let's talk today about the automotive industry's vehicle safety ratings.

Two organizations test cars for safety, the IIHS and the NHTSA. Each organization runs its own range of crash tests. The IIHS performs five different collisions on every car it rates, and it uses a rating scale that includes Good, Acceptable, Marginal and Poor. Meanwhile, the NHTSA conducts a range of three tests, and its rating system assigns stars, from five to one. Obviously, five stars are desired and one star is not. When considering cars to buy, look for models with high marks from both organizations.
